Tyrone Lady Eagles get historic win

A dominant pitching and defensive performance by the Tyrone Lady Eagles helped them defeat Phillipsburg-Osceola for the first time in the Tyrone softball program\’s history, despite getting only three hits in the game.
Hilary McNelis retired the side in order in the first inning and did not allow a ball out of the infield. Phillipsburg-Osceola pitcher Rebecca McCamely matched McNelis in the bottom of the inning by sitting Tyrone down 1-2-3.
After another easy inning on the mound, McNelis got the first hit of the game in the bottom of the second. Kim Cherry laid down a bunt in an attempt to move McNelis to second, and she reached first when the throw to first was in the dirt. A wild pitch moved McNelis and Cherry up a base, but McCamely struck out the next three batters, all on full counts.
McNelis showed that she could handle the pressure of pitcher\’s duel as well in the third and fourth innings. After a fly out to start the third, Ashley Brown collected Phillipsburg-Osceola\’s first hit of the ball game. A bunt moved her to second, and McCamely drew a walk. With two runners on, Missy Stager made a nice play on a sharp grounder for the third out.
Phillipsburg-Osceola threatened again the very next inning. Jenna Pearson led off the fourth with a shot to the right-center gap, but Ashley Pennabaker made a nice play to cut it off and hold Pearson to a single. Tara Johns sacrificed Pearson to second, but McNelis got a fly out and a strike out to end the inning.
McNelis got through the fifth inning quickly, and Ashley Ripka got things rolling in the bottom half of the inning for the Lady Eagles with a leadoff walk. After a strikeout and a ground out, Ripka stood at third with two outs. Pennabaker hit a rocket down the third base line that ricocheted off third baseman McKenzie Gonder\’s glove directly to the shortstop who fired it to first and retired Pennabaker by half a step for the third out.
“The bottom half of the order stepping up and almost getting us a run there was huge. It made the top of the order realize they could put a run or two across the plate. It gave us momentum,” said Tyrone head coach Lois Loncher about the bottom of the fifth inning.
McNelis put down Phillipsburg-Osceola in order in the top of the sixth to keep the momentum for the bottom half of the inning. Katie Whitby led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a Meghan McCallister bunt. Stager followed up with a sharp grounder through the middle of the infield that scored Whitby. Stager took second on the throw home, leading to an intentional walk to McNelis. A wild pitch moved Stager and McNelis up a base, and Phillipsburg-Osceola decided to intentionally walk Cherry to load the bases. McCamely came through in the pressure situation by getting a pop out and a fly out to get out of the inning only down one run.
“We discussed before the inning that if Katie got on, Meghan would bunt. It was textbook softball, base hit, move the runner up, hit them in,” Loncher said of the sixth inning rally.
With three outs standing between her, a 1-0 shutout and the first Tyrone win over Phillipsburg-Osceola in the history of the program, McNelis calmly retired the side in order with a pop out and two grounders.
“Hilary and Kim have been working very well together to set hitters up and put them in a position where they are going to get them out. You can see the confidence coming back to this team,” said Loncher about McNelis\’ shutout.
The Tyrone Lady Eagles will close out the regular season on Wednesday at Mount Union. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
