Eagles baseball team remains undefeated with win over Rockets

The Tyrone baseball team (3-0) won their third straight game of the young season, scoring in bunches to defeat Southern Huntingdon 9-2 at Southern Huntingdon.
Several Tyrone players stood out for their performances in the clutch.
In the top of the first, Brinton Mingle got things started for the Orange and Black clouting a two-run double to get Tyrone on the scoreboard. The Eagles broke out with three runs in all in the first. although Southern Huntingdon came right back with two tallies of their nown to narrow the Tyrone lead to 3-2.
That would be as close as the Rockets would get however. Barry Gummo and Brice Mertiff shut Southern out over the final six innings for the victory. Gummo struck out three and walked two to pick up the win, while Mertiff fanned three and didn’t walk a batter.
With the visiting Eagle up by just one run, Tyrone got some breathing room in the sixth scoring four times to take a comfortable 7-2 advantage. Barry Gummo, who went four-for-four in addition to pitching a solid game, doubled in the first two runs to open up a 5-2 margin.
Tyrone third baseman Nick Cushion added a pair of insurance runs with a seventh inning double that set the final score at 9-2.
Derrick Soellner and Barry Gummo each scored two runs for Tyrone and Ben Gummo, Clint Wilson each knocked in one run to aid the cause.
“Barry was a little shaky at the start,” reported Tyrone head coach Tom Coleman. “He seemed to trying to be too fine. But he settled down as he seemed to gain confidence. He started out slow, but finished strong. The final score might show we had an esay time, but we made too many mental mistakes. We need to find somebody who will step up and get us started. Maybe we were a little flat after the long trip to Southern, but we need to play better fundamentally. We have a big week next week with four games in five days. If we want to stay on top of our game, we have to be able to play a complete seven innings.”
