Tyrone repeats at Blair County Junior High Tournament

For the second consecutive year (and the fifth time in the eight-year tournament history), The Tyrone Golden Eagle Junior High Wrestling Team finished in first place in The Blair County Tournament, hosted by The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers. Tyrone outdistanced Hollidaysburg 243.5 to 228.5 to claim the championship. The Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils finished in fourth place with 126 points.
Tyrone had six champs at the tourney: Cody Weaver won a round robin to claim the 80 pound championship, Anthony Romano won three times to win the 90 pound bracket, Justin Schopp (the tournament\’s \”Outstanding Wrestler\”, as voted on by the coaches of each team) won the 122 pound weight class, Jacob Smerekar pinned three opponents to win the 130 pound championship, James Updike also pinned his two opponents to place first at 155, and Josh Wright won his two matches to win the 210 pound weight class. In addition to these champs, Tyrone also had five runners-up (Shane Emigh-95, Shayne Tate-110, Donnie Conrad-145, John Markel-185, and Brandon Oswalt-250) and one third place finisher, William Shauf at the 75 pound weight class.
“It\’s nice to win the tournament for the second consecutive year, but we certainly left some room for improvement,” said Coach Jason Bainey. “There were many positives, but many things we also need to work on in the mat room. We\’ll take some time next week to focus on some of those needs.\”
Bellwood-Antis had two champs at the tournament: Trey Mock (85), who won a round robin bracket and Boe Latchford (165), who went 3-0 in the tourney. Bellwood also placed four wrestlers in second place with three of them matching up against Tyrone champs: Tim Collier (90), who lost to Romano, Ron Wilson (122), who lost to Schopp, and Andy Martinez (210), who lost to Wright. Ricky Shawley placed second at the 105 pound weight class, going 2-1. In addition, Shane Noye (110) placed third.
Tyrone is idle until next Wednesday when it visits West Branch for a junior high/varsity doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
Bellwood-Antis is on the mat again next Thursday, when the Little Blue Devils join the B-A varsity at Everett, with junior high action beginning at 6 p.m. and the Bellwood-Antis-Everett varsity to follow.
