Tyrone boys claim Blairsville consy game

Tyrone concluded their trip to the Blairsville Holiday Tournament with four players scoring in double figures in a 65-50 win over Sauerton in the consolation final Tuesday.
The Orange and Black jumoed out in front of Sauerton early to outscore their opponent 17-8 and then added slim scoring matgins in each of the final three quarters as well to improve their record to 4-5 on the season for coach Mike Harris.
Playing on consecutive nights for the first time in the 2003-04 season, Tyrone overcame a tough 58-51 loss to Saltsburg in the opening round of the tournament on Monday to collect the third place trophy a day later with a decisive triumph.
“It was a total team effort,” said Harris. “The kids played hard and bounced back from a tough one last night (Monday).”
Kevin Hershberger led the attack for the E agles with 17 points and Nick Cushion pumped in 15, including three three-point goals. Cushion was the leading scorer for Tyrone in the tournament with 17 points and five treys in the Saltsburg contest. Josh Crabtree and Tadd Chamberlain each added 10 points against Sauerton and Leonard Wilson had nine points.
After taking the big opening period lead, the Golden Eagles added 16-14, 15-14 and 17-14 margins in the next three quarters.
The next action for the Eagles will be Saturday, Jan. 3, at Central High School. The boys will play at 7 p.m. as the nightcap in a girls/boys doubleheader with the Lady Eagle/Central contest kicking off at 5 p.m.
