Tyrone woman spearheads new support group in Altoona

Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Altoona has announced the formation of a support group for individuals living with congestive heart failure.
The group, started by Tyrone native and registered nurse, Julie Decker, will meet on the third Thursday of every month starting on Thursday, October 16, 2003 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at the hospital.
According to the American Heart Association, “58,800,000 Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease, and nearby 5 million of those are living with CHF. Congestive heart failure claims the lives of nearly 250,000 patients per year. There are over 850,000 hospitalizations per year for CHF alone. It is the single most frequent cause of hospitalization in people 65 and older.”
The goals of this support group include sharing lifestyle modifications including dietary and weight management, exercise and conserving energy, fluid reduction, pharmacological information, and emotional well being. The group will allow patients to learn more about their disease through the expertise of different speakers. Patients call also share their thoughts and emotions in dealing with this chronic condition.
According to Decker, “the support group is yet another example of the hospital’s commitment to the health and well being of the communities of Blair, Bedford, Huntingdon, Cambria and surrounding counties.” Decker will serve as the facilitator of the group.
