Scents of Life celebrates five years in Tyrone

The five-year milestone has been reached for one local business.
Scents of Life is celebrating five years in the Tyrone area, and proprietor Susan Bonsell couldn’t be happier.
“It’s nice to be here for five years because in the beginning people told me Tyrone wouldn’t shop Tyrone,” said Bonsell of the discouraging words she first heard when she opened the candle and gift specialty shop. “But after five years, I can still get top-quality merchandise and not have to pay the mall overhead.”
The doors to Scents of Life opened in October of 1998 with the focus on candles, and the business quickly expanded from there.
“The goal in the beginning was to get established in the community and to provide a service to people,” said Bonsell.
“We wanted to help them find the best product for the best possible price and to have fun while doing it. Through the years, people will come in and ask for more country or more candles, so we strive to have something for everyone’s scents of life.”
The store carries a wide variety of merchandise, and new products come in for every season. Some of the items Scents of Life is known for include a wide variety of candles, Boyds Bears, home decor, quilts, throws and pictures, just to name a few.
A specialty of the shop is gift baskets made to fit any special occasion. Bonsell said they have created gift baskets for Christmas, bridal showers, birthdays, anniversaries, sympathy and weddings.
Customers can call the shop, and Bonsell or Scents of Life employee Crystal Peightal will create a basket to fit the needs of the customer.
Bonsell said they have even done engagement baskets where they have hidden the engagement ring somewhere inside a basket for a lucky girl to find.
Other items Scents of Life is known for is its handmade two-story, three-story and table-top decorative houses made from wood. These houses are just one example of the products that are handmade by either Bonsell or Peightal and then are available for purchase at the shop.
With the holiday shopping season soon beginning, the shop also offers a wide variety of Christmas ornaments and decorations. There is also a selection of Christmas teas and jellies that can be enjoyed on cold days.
“I would like to thank the customers who’ve stayed here,” said Bonsell. “I like to hear what the customers have to say. The most important thing is customer input.”
To celebrate the customer support of five years, Bonsell will be doing something special for the whole month of November. Customers can stop by the store during the week to register for a $50 gift basket give-a-way. A $50 gift basket will be given away every weekend of November. That means four lucky Scents of Life customers will be winners.
Starting in November, Scents of Life customers can also register for a $150 gift basket that is given away each Christmas season.
Bonsell said the shop has grown and changed over the years, but the most important thing is that she has fun doing it.
She also enjoys having a chance to give back to the community by donating items from the shop to high school organizations, churches and other service organizations when they have a need for fundraising items. Scents of Life also sponsors a soccer team and a softball team.
The hours for Scents of Life are currently Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The store phone number is 684-2062. As the holiday shopping season approaches, the hours will be extended.
