Tyrone Chamber of Commerce notes golf tourney winners

Although the rain came early, 80 teams still showed up at the annual Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Golf Classic last Thursday at the Sinking Valley Country Club.
The shotgun start began at approximately 11:30 a.m. and rain fell until the duffers reached their respective fourth holes. After that, the skies cleared and awarded the Chamber with a perfect day for a tournament on the golf course.
The first place award went to Mayes Memorials, which scored a 59. Team members were Fred Miller, George McMurtry, Dick Stever and Steve Turiano. Second place was secured with a 60 score from the DelGrosso’s team, made up of Lenny Lear, Rob DelGrosso, Rodney Burkheimer and Peter Gardella. Each member of the two teams received gift certificates from Tyrone-area businesses.
The Closest to the Pin contest was held on hole nos. 16 and 2. Mike Curtorillo was closest on no. 16 and Fred Miller was closest on no. 2.
The Long Drive contest was held on holes nos. 18 and 9. Bill Phillips was longest on no. 18 and Bobby DelGrosso was closest on no. 9.
The Straightest Drive contest was held on hole nos. 14 and 4. George McMurtry was straightest on no. 14 and Fred Miller was closest on no. 4.
The Play to Win Game was won by Dr. Thomas O’Brien.
There were no winners for the three hole-in-one contests, where players had the opportunity to win $12,000, $12,000 and a set of Ben Hogan irons, or a 2003 Ford Focus. Also, there were no $4,000 winners in the putting contest.
Following the tournament, the Sinking Valley Country Club provided a buffet-style dinner for the players.
According to Rose Black, acting president of the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce, the amount raised in the tournament has not been calculated yet, but she said she expects it to be around $1,000. Proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Snyder-Tyrone Public Library’s building fund.
