Miss Teen Pennsylvania from Blair County helps to serve American Red Cross

At a competition held in Chicago, 17-year-old Kristin Muri of Altoona, competed with nearly 50 girls to become the reigning Miss Teen Pennsylvania of 2003.
Her mother Debra Muri works as a nurse anesthetist at the Tyrone Hospital, and her father Greg Muri works at Computer Learning Network in Altoona.
Kristin currently works as a lifeguard at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Memorial Pool in Altoona. On Friday, she will travel to Point Park College in Pittsburgh, where she plans to double major in theater and communications.
Kristin said her dream is to be in films or on Broadway, but if that doesn’t work out then she wants to become a public relations director.
“I’ve been dancing since I was three and acting since I could talk,” said Kristin. “Dancing plays a big factor in my life.”
She has had plenty of experience already in musicals and plays at Altoona High School, plays at the Mishler Theater and at camps and work shops. She has also taken dancing lessons at Sigels in Altoona.
Kristin began her pageant career when she was in tenth grade. In 2001, she was crowned as Pennsylvania’s Perfect Teen which allowed her to travel to Orlando where she won America’s Perfect Teen.
In July of 2003, she attended the week-long Miss Teen Pennsylvania Pageant in Chicago. There she went through numerous competitions to win the event such as evening gown, personal interview, fun fashion and aerobic wear.
As Miss Teen Pennsylvania, Kristin has chosen the American Red Cross as her platform.
According to ARC Fund Development Manager Tommi Burchfield, Kristin is serving as an honorary board member for the ARC.
Kristin became involved with the ARC when she was working with student council. The ARC would come to school for blood drives, and Kristin would volunteer. When she turned 17, she gave blood. Since she is a lifeguard, she gained her certifications for CPR and first aid through the Red Cross.
Burchfield said it is positive for Kristin to be involved with the Red Cross because she can help with public appearances, fundraising efforts, parades, and other Red Cross functions.
As for Kristin, she thinks she is finished with the pageants for now. She wants to enjoy her year as Miss Teen Pennsylvania, and then maybe compete in the Miss division in a couple of years when she turns 19.
