Emmanuel Baptist presents movie night in downtown Tyrone Friday evening

Emmanuel Baptist Church has scheduled a movie night Friday, August 22 at 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot next to Joy Beans.
The event is free and open to the public. Hot-dogs and drinks will be provided to those in attendance while supplies last.
“We hosted one in July and had such a great turnout that we are doing it again,” said Pastor Chris Walls. “We wanted to do something for the community, and we need some exposure to the community since we meet at the Tyrone YMCA as a church. It’s a neat way to reach out to the residents.”
The congregation of Emmanuel Baptist Church has been meeting at the Tyrone Area YMCA for the past six years, and Pastor Walls has been affiliated with the church since October of 2000.
The way the movie night came about is that a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church heard about it from a different congregation in another community. The rest of the members at Emmanuel Baptist thought it would be an excellent way for their church and the Tyrone community to join together in a night of fellowship.
The first movie night in downtown Tyrone brought out approximately 225 members of the community, and Pastor Walls hopes the same amount of people show up for the one scheduled for Friday.
Pastor Walls talked to Terry Glunt of M & T Bank, and Glunt agreed to donate the use of the parking lot next to Joy Beans for the movie night festivities. Next, Pastor Walls talked to the owners of Joy Beans who agreed to donate their building’s wall as the big screen for the movie to be displayed upon and to also donate the needed electricity.
Emmanuel Baptist purchased a copyright license which lists certain production companies. Under this license, the church is allowed to show certain movies if they do not charge a fee to the viewers.
Pastor Walls said the church tries to choose movies without vulgarity or explicit content so that the movie night can be fun for the whole family.
For Friday, the church is not allowed to release the name of the movie in print because of the copyright license. However, they are allowed to give a brief description.
The movie scheduled to be shown is about a high school football team that overcomes many hardships to win a state championship in Virginia in the early 1970’s.
Pastor Walls said he thanks the community members for coming out to the previous movie night and hopes just as many come out to the one scheduled for Friday.
“I think we’ll have more movie nights in the future,” he said. “When winter hits, we can use the YMCA.”
