Blair County United Way kicks off annual fundraising campaign

The United Way of Blair County has scheduled a co-ed volleyball tournament to kick off its annual fundraising campaign, starting at 9 a.m. on August 23 on the front lawn of Penelec, A FirstEnergy Company, 405 W. Plank Road in Altoona.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the family event, from co-workers, to friends, and especially those skilled in volleyball.
The tournament is set up with four players to a team, and all teams must be registered with appropriate donations submitted by 4 p.m., August 9. Trophies will be awarded at the end of the tournament.
Businesses and organizations wishing to sponsor a team in the event can make a donation of $50 per team.
Food and refreshments will be provided by Aid for Animals/Laws for Paws. Activities for young children will be provided, and parking and restrooms will also be available at the site.
Executive Director Kay Johnson said this is the first-ever volleyball tournament for the United Way.
She said besides the activities for children, there will also be a car safety seat check for parents from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
If seats are not installed properly in vehicles, there will be technicians on-hand to give instruction on proper installation of safety seats.
The volleyball tournament kicks off the 2003 United Way fundraising campaign, which lasts until November of this year.
United Way raises money for 29 different agencies in Blair County through payroll deductions from area businesses and companies.
Johnson said Blair County United Way has set a goal to raise over $1 million during this campaign. The money will then be dispersed throughout the 29 agencies in March of 2004.
Some of the currently funded agencies include: The ARC of Blair County, American Cancer Society, Bellwood-Antis Public Library, Big Brother Big Sister of Blair County, Home Nursing Agency, Tyrone Corps of Salvation Army, Tyrone-Snyder Public Library and Tyrone Area YMCA.
