Big Brothers Big Sisters of Blair County and Pepsi have joined together to bring the Sixth Annual Big Brother Big Sister – Pepsi Celebrity Golf Classic, which is scheduled for Monday, July 28 at the Scotch Valley Country Club in Hollidaysburg.
According to Executive Director Karen Kelley, 100 golfers have already registered for the tournament. In past years between 100 – 125 golfers have participated in the event.
A donation of $150 per golfer or $600 per foursome is requested. The tournament is open to all levels of golfers, both men and women. Foursomes will be handicapped based on their team’s total handicap.
The pre-registration information is requested by Friday so that the staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters can provide it to Scotch Valley Country Club.
The celebrity for this year’s tournament is scheduled to be Jerry Sandusky, who will speak later in the evening at dinner about the importance of mentoring to youth.
Former defensive coordinator for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team, Sandusky founded The Second Mile in 1977. The organization works with young people and helps them to achieve their potential in life as individuals and as community members.
Over the years, the golf classic has attracted many celebrities including: Franco Harris from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Leidel Mitchell from the Baltimore Colts, Kent Tekulve, Nellie Briles and Bob Robertson from the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pete Duranco from the Denver Broncos.
Registration for the tournament begins at 10:30 a.m., with a buffet lunch at 11 a.m. A putting contest sponsored by Furrer Beverage will kick-off the event, and team pictures will be taken of each foursome. The golf classic is scheduled to begin at noon.
