Barry Gummo pitches Golden Eagles over Williamsburg

Tyrone (1-2) picked up their first win of the season at Williamsburg on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles opened the 2003 baseball season with tough losses to area powers Huntingdon and Bellwood-Antis.
Left-hander Barry Gummo tossed a one-hitter over three innings and his Tyrone teammates supplied lots of firepower to end the game via the mercy rule.
Gummo allowed just one run, striking out four and walking two.
The Eagles opened the game with six runs in the top of the first, before the Blue Pirates even had an chance to bat, then added four more in the second inning and lit up Williamsburg for 11 third-inning tallies. Williamsburg was their own worst enemy walking nine Tyrone batters and committing eight errors.
Shortstop Brice Mertiff and designated hitter Derrick Soellner also banged out two hits, including a home run by Soellner. Catcher Ben Gummo scored four times as the Eagles got production from up and down the lineup, including several junior varsity players whom Tyrone coach Tom Coleman was able to collect some varsity experience. Soellner, Ben Gummo and first baseman Nick Cushion each knocked in three runs and Tyler Rickards, playing second base had two RBIs.
“Everybody hit the ball very well today,” said Tyrone coach Tom Coleman. “When you score 21 runs you have to be doing something right. We didn’t depend on the top of our lineup or the middle, from one through nine in the order they all did a good job. Barry Gummo threw a nice game. He went right after the Williamsburg hitters and didn’t throw many pitches. If we need him, Barry could be ready to throw in relief on Friday. Our defense did a good job and we got the opportunity to get a lot of our junior varsity players in to get some game experience.”
Tyrone will travel to Claysburg, on Friday, to battle the Bulldogs. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
