Lady Blue Devils fall to Juniata Valley girls 58-45

The Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devil basketball team outplayed the Lady Hornets of Juniata Valley in the second half of Monday night’s game in Alexandria. However, thanks to a Lady Hornet offensive barrage in the first half, it didn’t really matter.
The Lady Hornets played their way to a 16-point halftime lead, and then coasted the rest of the way to a 58-45 Juniata Valley League victory.
The Lady Hornets put four players in double figures on their way to victory. Brittany Donaldson and Claudia McDowell each scored 15 points, Lindsey Irvin posted 12, and Ashley Bartlebaugh 10 points. Most of the Juniata Valley scoring occurred in a dominating first half for the Lady Hornets.
Valley took control of the game early, using stingy defense and a seven-point first quarter from Brittany Donaldson to jump out to a 16-6 lead after one period.
The Lady Blue Devil offense was ignited by Katie Gardner early in the second quarter, as she scored seven points in the period. However, Juniata Valley’s offense kept firing on all cylinders as they matched Gardner’s effort with a more balanced attack. Receiving buckets from five different players in the second quarter alone, including seven from Claudia McDowell, the Lady Hornets opened up their lead to 33-17 at the half.
B-A’s Gardner gave the Lady Blue Devils some hope as she emerged to score eight points in the third quarter, temporarily getting Bellwood back into the game. However, this hope was immediately shattered by huge three-pointers from Claudia McDowell and Brittany Donaldson that put the game away for good.
The Lady Hornets then iced the game from the free throw line as they shot a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.
Bellwood-Antis was led by Katie Gardner’s 17 points. The Lady Devils also received eight points from Steph Hatch and six points from both Emily Worthing and Lauren Carter. The loss drops B-A to 14-9 on the season, including a 6-3 mark in the second cycle of the Juniata Valley League.
The Lady Blue Devils will have the rest of the week off before heading to Altoona on Saturday for a showdown with Bishop Guilfoyle at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium. Tip-off time is set for 7:30.
Junior Varsity
Bellwood-Antis’ Lauren Carter scored eight points and Susan Ridgeway added six, but it wasn’t enough, as the Lady Blue Devils Junior Varsity team fell to the Lady Hornets of Juniata Valley 37-26.
The Lady Hornets were led by Kirsten Rowe and Jenna Curley, scoring 11 and eight points respectively.
The loss drops the Lady Blue Devil jayvees to 15-6 on the season.
