Six TAHS students advance to regional band contest

More than half of the 11 Tyrone Area High School students who attended the 2003 District 6 Band Festival competition in Altoona Saturday have qualified for regional competition in March.
Kris Laird, band director at TAHS, said he was proud to see six students advance to the next round of competition.
“I thought we looked really good over there,” said Laird. “All of our kids played their hearts out and did the best they could. That’s all they were asked to do, and they did it.”
Those advancing were Morgan Davis, Alicia Rodriguez, Katie Osterhout, Liz Kreckel, Morris Reese and Rob Rich.
“Now it’s time to start gearing up for the March competitions,” said Laird. “This district round was challenging for the students in itself, but we’re expecting much greater competition in the regional round in March.”
According to Laird, the students already have received the sheet music to begin practicing for the March 12 competition.
“This is the largest contingent of students that have advanced to the regional level since my arrival here,” said Laird. “I think we took five in 2001.”
Meanwhile, Tyrone is sending six students to the upcoming 2003 District 6 Jazz Band Festival Wednesday at Richland High School. This is the second year TAHS will attend the event.
These students, who include Rob Rich, Doug Conrad, Wendi Taylor, Ryan George, Adam Roth and Kurt Diehl, auditioned for the jazz festival in early December and were selected to participate in one of three, 20-piece jazz bands at the festival. Last year, only Diehl attended the festival.
According to Laird, 21 schools will be represented at the event with about 60 kids participating.
Sophomore Doug Conrad and junior Rob Rich will play in the Red Jazz Band under the direction of Duquesne University Jazz professor and professional composer/arranger Mike Tomaro.
Seniors Kurt Diehl, Ryan George and juniors Wendi Taylor and Adam Roth will be playing in the Blue Jazz Band under the direction of District 6 band directors.
The two-day event begins Thursday and concludes Feb. 1 with a concert featuring all three bands. The concert is slated for 2 p.m. in the Richland Area High School auditorium.
