Post players lead Lady Blue Devils past West Branch 59-43

I’m sure that if you talk to any one of the Bellwood Antis Lady Blue Devils, they will all give you the same answer if asked about going to West Branch. The hour and 15 minute trip to Allport every year is normally one that is not looked forward to by anybody. West Branch’s girls program has also traditionally been down, so mental focus has also been tough to maintain.
However, Bellwood-Antis had no problem at all with focus or the Lady Warriors on Tuesday night as they picked up the 59-43 win.
B-A wanted to come out of the gate strong, and coach Nick Lovrich couldn’t have scripted a better start. The Lady Blue Devils jumped all over the Lady Warriors en route to a 24-4 run to open the game. The Lady Devils never looked back from there.
“We started out really strong tonight,” said B-A coach Nick Lovrich. “That start is what really got us the win tonight. We need to come out like that every game.”
The first quarter ended 24-4 in favor of the Blue Devils, and the Lady Devils outscored West Branch 14-13 in the second quarter to take a comfortable lead into the locker room.
“The second half we did a lot of experimenting,” said Lovrich. “They cameback a little bit, but I was pleased with the way we executed.”
West Branch outscored the Lady Blue Devils in both the third and fourth quarters but it wasn’t nearly enough to get back into the game. The third quarter ended with the scoreboard reading 47-30 B-A. It was only a matter of time until BA notched another win, and eight minutes later Bellwood-Antis had the 59-43 win.
Sophomore forward Steph Hatch came up big for B-A hitting for a game high 21 points. Fellow post player Katie Gardner chipped in with 15 points to aid the Lady Blue Devils’ cause. Emily Worthing and Ashley Edevane had two three pointers each. Bellwood improved to 11-7 overall on the year.
Val Amick led West Branch with 14 points.
Bellwood-Antis has no time to rest taking on the Lady Warriors of Everett in a non-conference game tonight at the Bellwood gymnasium. Junior Varsity tipoff is at 6 with Varsity following at 7:30.
The Bellwood Junior Varsity team destroyed West Branch by a score of 50-7.
Freshman post player Lauren Carter netted an incredible 30 points to front the Lady Devils.
