Lady Blue Devils capture big win over Williamsburg

Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devil head coach Nick Lovrich had some very simple advice for his basketball team before Tuesday’s showdown with Williamsburg. The always-enthusiastic coach told his squad, “Do the common things uncommonly well.”
Judging by the outcome of the contest, it was obvious that the girls took his message to heart.
The Lady Blue Devils dominated the Lady Pirates in every phase of the game, out-rebounding, out-hustling, and most importantly out-scoring their counterparts on their way to a convincing 63-45 win over the home team.
“This was probably our best game of the season,” said Lovrich. “We received contributions from a lot of different people. Steph Hatch and Katie Gardner did a really nice job inside. Also, we got a lot of big rebounds from Emily Worthing and Ashley Edevane did an excellent job running the point.”
Williamsburg’s Ashley Severa did score 10 points in the first quarter as the Lady Pirates jumped out to an early lead. The two teams exchanged baskets until Bellwood’s Emily Worthing jump-started the Lady Devil offense with a three pointer and then followed it with a put-back off of an offensive rebound. Worthing’s first quarter efforts propelled the Lady Blue Devils to a 19-12 advantage after one period.
From there Bellwood’s Katie Gardner took over. The 5’ 11″ junior forward scored 10 of her game-high 28 points in the second quarter as the Lady Blue Devils raced out to a 35-21 lead at intermission.
Williamsburg cut the margin to 6 after the half by hitting three of the first four shots they took in the third quarter. However, down the stretch the Lady Pirates just couldn’t match Bellwood’s size inside. With it’s tallest player, Ashley Severa, at 5’8″, Williamsburg had no way of stopping Katie Gardner or Steph Hatch, both of which are over 5’10″.
Gardner finished with 28 points, hitting 14 of 18 shots from the floor. Also, she recorded 10 rebounds and five blocks. Hatch, not to be outdone, scored 16 points while pulling 10 rebounds and blocking four shots of her own. Bellwood also received eight points from Ashley Edevane and seven from Emily Worthing.
Williamsburg was led by Ashley Severa, who after her outburst in the first quarter, was held to just four points the rest of the game, finishing with 14. Morgan Tate and Amy Brumbaugh each scored nine points for the Lady Pirates who, with the loss, dropped to 8-7 on the season and 0-3 in the second cycle of the Juniata Valley League.
With the win, the Lady Blue Devils upped their record to 10-6 on the season and 9-3 against Juniata Valley League opponents. This includes a 3-0 mark in the league’s second cycle. The Lady Devils will play next on Friday, January 24, as they look to avenge an early-season loss to the Lady Rams of Penns Valley. The game will take place at the Bellwood-Antis High School gymnasium and will tip-off at 7:30.
