Easter Seals announces a new Goodwill Ambassador for 2003

The Altoona Regional Office of Easter Seals Central Pennsylvania has named Emma Smith as its 2002-2003 Goodwill Ambassador.
“Our mission is to provide programs and services to children and adults with disabilities in Central Pennsylvania,” said Donna Wassell, development officer for ESCP.
Emma’s role as ambassador includes representing children and adults with disabilities at local Easter Seals events.
The daughter of Jennifer and John Smith of Roaring Spring, Emma was born November 21, 1997. She only weighed one pound seven ounces and measured just ten inches in length because she was born extremely premature at 24 weeks.
At just two days old, Emma went through heart surgery and was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, which is the increase of fluid around the brain that is controlled with the placement of a shunt.
Now at five years old, she receives physical and occupational therapy at ESCP. She currently walks with the assistance of a Kaye Walker on various surfaces and terrain. Emma is now walking 10-15 feet unassisted and can stand approximately two minutes without falling.
She attends Garver Memorial YMCA preschool and enjoys swimming and playing with her nine-year-old sister, Alicia.
“We put out an application to our therapists and ask who they feel would be good ambassadors,” said Wassell.
Emma was one of three candidates that the therapists recommended. ESCP interviewed the finalists and their families. The organization chose someone that could make the commitment to travel to the different events throughout the year.
“She comes to all our events, she and her family, and represents children and adults with disabilities in Pennsylvania,” said Wassell.
The Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania has many events throughout the year to raise money for the organization.
“We have Office Olympics in March, the Bounce Marathon in April, a Legacy Dinner in May and the Softball Marathon in August,” said Melissa Aungst, development director at ESCP.
Emma will represent Easter Seals Central Pennsylvania at these special events throughout the upcoming year.
