Bellwood-Antis girls ground Bald Eagle Area 61-49

The Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devils knew they needed to bounce back and find a way to win at Bald Eagle. Coming off two lopsided losses in their own holiday tournament, BA coach Nick Lovrich and his squad knew that a win over Bald Eagle was a must, and they did exactly what they needed to do as the girls picked up the 61-49 victory on Saturday.
“This game was really important for us even though it was a non-conference game,” said Lovrich. “We needed to get back on the winning track, and the girls really came out focused today.”
Bellwood did indeed come out focused as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead. The Lady Eagles fought back and made the game respectable as the first quarter ended 13-8 in favor of BA. The second quarter ended in a near draw as the Lady Blue Devils took a 27-23 lead into the locker room.
“I was proud of the way we started,” Lovrich added. “They did a nice job to battle back, but I think our quick start really set the tone for the game.” The Lady Blue Devils began the third quarter scrapping with Bald Eagle, and both teams finished the quarter with 12 points each, making the score 39-35 after three. The Lady Blue Devils then used a strong 4th quarter performance to put away the Lady Eagles and make the final score 61-49. BA improved to 6-4 on the year. Bellwood posted four different players in double figures to aid in the win.
After playing a 12-12 third quarter, the Lady Blue Devils turned it up a notch to insure the Bald Eagle Area girls couldn’t get back into the game outscoring the Lady Eagles 22-14 to win going away.
Katie Gardner led all scorers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Stephanie Hatch had a big game as well, chipping in 13 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks. Rachel Meredith netted 12, and Ashley Edevane scored 10 and dished out six assists.
“I was most pleased with the fact that we had four girls score in double figures,” said Lovrich. “If we can get three or four people in double figures each game then we should be in good shape.”
Bald Eagle Area, who fell to 1-11, was led by DeFrate and Lyle with 11 points each.
The Bellwood Lady Blue Devils return to action on Monday with a Juniata Valley League opponent as they travel to Southern Huntingdon. JV tipoff is at 6:30 with Varsity to follow at 8.
The Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devil Junior Varsity squad picked up a 38-22 win over Bald Eagle Area. Samantha Erickson led the Lady Blue Devils with 15 points.
