Jimmy Gillam qualifies for District golf tournament

The Eastern Sectional of the District Six Golf Tournament was held at the State College Elks Country Club on Monday.
Both Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis were among the schools included in the Eastern Section.
Jimmy Gillam of Tyrone was the only local golfer to qualify for next Monday’s District Six Tournament at the Toftrees Country Club in State College. Robby Walizer of State College and Mike Braniff of BEA shared medalist honors with low scores of 77.
Jimmy just got in under the cutoff by shooting an 86 on the cold, windswept course. Tyrone teammates Thad Westley (87), Matt Germino (89), Derrick Soellner (90) and Brandon Hribik (90) just missed the cutoff of 86.
“I thought Jimmy did well, but I was kind of surprised,” said Tyrone coach Jim Gillam. “Actually I though he would have a tough time, with the cold and windy weather making it a longer course than it actually is. I was a little disappointed. I thought Matt and Thad would also be able to qualify.”
No Blue Devil golfer was able to qualify for the Districts. Bellwood-Antis golfer Brent Hughes shot a 90 to lead the Blue Devils. Chris Skibo had a 99 and Ryan Kenawell carded a 105.
“We didn’t have anyone place this year,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Greg Perry. “With the little amount of experience we have this year, I really wasn’t expecting to get anybody through to the districts.”
