Bellwood-Antis School Board holds August work session

The Bellwood-Antis School Board held a work session Tuesday at 7 p.m. to discuss and prepare the committee meeting agenda for the official Tuesday, August 13, 2002 school board meeting at Bellwood-Antis High School.
The board went over a list of issues that will be of importance August 13th, by which the public is welcomed to attend.
The school bus routes, stops and times for the 2002-03 school year will be seeking approval by Bellwood-Antis School Board. Routes D5, D6P and D11 will be consolidated for efficiency reasons. Buses are not being filled to expected capacity. The board wants to consolidate and eliminate one run in the afternoon that is an hour and a quarter long. The buses have kids assigned to fill capacity, but not all of those individuals ride the bus due to after-school activities and/or they may drive to school. The consolidation would be more efficient to the school district.
The board will also be looking to approve an increase in the day-to-day substitute teacher rate from $70 to $75 per day in order to stay on track with the likes of Tyrone and Altoona’s wages. When discussed during the work session, Chairperson John Shaffer requested perhaps a larger increase of $80 per day. Shaffer noted, “I’d just assume to raise it up another five dollars because people then might say they get treated better in Bellwood.”
With the suggested increase, substitute teachers may be drawn more to the Bellwood-Antis School District for work. The decision on which increase will be beneficial for the school district will be made next week during the school board meeting
Bellwood-Antis School Board will be seeking approval of the list of district substitutes for the coming school year as presented. The district substitute list is renewed annually.
The board also discussed the open kindergarten aide position for the 2002-03 school year created by the resignation of Donna Kimble. The position was offered to employees inside the school district but no one wished to transfer.
Bellwood-Antis Superintendent Dr. Rodney Kuhns noted that the school district will be contacting substitute aides to fill the position, and if unsuccessful, they will advertise in the newspaper.
Next Tuesday the board will be moving to approve the first reading of the Strategic Plan for the period of 2002-2008 as presented.
Final approval is scheduled for September. Approval of the Act 48 Professional Education Plan as presented will likewise be seeking approval by the board next week.
The board will seek approval for the listing of wages and salaries for school district employees for the coming school year.
After the work session last evening, Bellwood-Antis School Board held an executive meeting to discuss matters dealing with purchase of property and negotiations.
The Bellwood-Antis School Board will hold its official board meeting next Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at 7 p.m. in the Bellwood-Antis High School. Again, the public is more than welcomed to attend.
